Be careful Of Whom You Idolize

I used to be a great fan of secular music and movies, I loved and adored the actors and musicians so much, that I followed them like a good disciple would do, even before the inception of gadgets where you see their information easily, back in the days of analog, I went out of my way to know about these people, like whom they are married to, how many movies or songs they were featured in, where they come from, how many kids they had and their names, their birthdays, their parents, how many houses or cars they owned, how much they are worth, I searched for every single I formation I could lay my hands about them.

It made me feel relevant among my peers, to make them know that I was more current and social than all of them, until one day when I was watching an interview of my most loved celebrity, and he was asked how many movies he had starred in, and if he watches movies that feature him, I felt foolish when he said he lost count of his movies and he does not even have the time to sit down and watch his movies, because he was always busy thinking of more ideas, that will make him act better, I felt betrayed, If I knew what I knew now back then, I would have idolized Jesus Christ.

These people don’t even know or care about me, but Jesus Christ loves me and cares about my life here on earth and even promises me an eternal life of bliss with him in the afterlife if I accept him as my lord and savior.

Now, this actor is somebody I spend hours out of my life watching, saying he does not have time to watch his movies, It made me feel very used and dumped, it made me uneasy with myself, how stupid I have been all my life placing value on irrelevant things that don’t add but take away from me.

As a believer, I took my time to observe the life of this person I was idolizing all my life, they promote lust, fornication, and divorce, and almost everything they do or say goes contrary to the life I wanted for myself.

These people we idolize and want to become like did not become like that by spending hours glued to TV sets or with headphones on their heads, they worked very hard to become those people you now love and adore, you only see the glamour and the splendor, but you have no idea about the pain and sacrifices they made to become good at what they do.

God expects better from us, the believers, we are expected to be different, the mind is like soil, what you feed it is what grows in it.

You have two options, you can continue to spend your lifetime listening to inspiring and motivating Christian movies, books, or songs that will build you to be a better person and see how your life will transform in a matter of a very short while, or you keep living in darkness by idolizing people who are out to get your souls.

May God help us all to make the right choice as we choose whom we want to idolize, Amen.
